Of Marriage and Single Life
Of Marriage and Single Life is a masterpiece by Francis Bacon. In the essay, he presents us his preference of marriage to single life with convincing arguments. He argues for his idea based the following reasons: Even if the wife and children are considered impediments to fortune and success, people can benefit a lot from marriage, for it provides guarantee for the future time. What’s more, to the author, the wife and children are a kind of discipline of humanity, and a married man is more warm-hearted and charitable than the single one.
To make his arguments more convincing, Bacon compares the advantages of marriage and the shortcomings of single life to tell us marriage is better than single life. Taking the sentence “wives are young men’s mistresses, companions for middle age, old men’s nurses” for example, it is quite persuasive and reasonable. In addition, the argument is the conclusion according to Bacon’s long-time observation and consideration about life. He puts forward a further idea that marriage is beneficial to both an individual and society. Marriage makes a man responsible, tender, enthusiastic and warm-hearted. On the contrary, a bachelor only cares about himself, and pays no attention to the future, embodied in the sentence “unmarried men are best friends; best masters; best servants; but not always best subjects; for they are light to run away; and almost all fugitives are of that condition.”
In short, the essay shines with Bacon’s brilliant logic, distinguishable and convincing explanation, as well as inductive methodology.
